Through the Villa District and along the Stream Valley

By 2023.10.13.január 8th, 2024No Comments

Tour information

The tour starts from the Örs Vezér Square HÉV and metro station, where you cycle through the beautiful villa district of Mátyásföld on the inner, less busy roads, then cross the „steppe” between Mátyásföld and Rákoskeresztúr. After the ascent, descend into the valley of Rákos Stream, and cycle up the bike lane along Naplás Road, so you can roll down to Lake Naplás, where a picturesque, waterside resting place awaits. In the renovated leisure park, three educational trails invite you to explore the waters, which you can even connect if you’d like to get to know the lake’s wildlife during a one-and-a-half-hour walk. Before you continue, it’s worth climbing up to the wooden lookout tower near Lake Naplás, which reveals the secrets of the Gödöllő Hills from a height of 22 metres. After this detour, the Szilas Stream will be your companion, and you can enjoy the atmosphere of the stream valley undisturbed. You will soon arrive at Hermina Bike Park, where a variety of entertainment awaits you from the pump track to the playground, and you can enjoy a good burger at the Kalóz Burger & More café or taste their own brand of beer. You can return to the city centre through the quiet streets of Rákosszentmihály.

Attractions

Lake Naplás Lookout Tower

The only representative from Pest on our list is located on the shore of Budapest’s largest still water, next to Lake Naplás in the 16th district. The 22-metre-high wooden structure stretches above the treetops, providing an unobstructed, stunning 360-degree view of the lake and the nearby Gödöllő Hills. The lookout tower fits perfectly into the green surroundings that have been transformed into a leisure area in the recent decades, offering new bicycle paths, benches, and fishing spots by the lakeside, as well as a reception building and parking lot.

+ Programme tip

Lake Naplás educational path

A magical aquatic world awaits both children and adults at Lake Naplás, located on the eastern border of Pest. In this recreational park, which is also popular among the locals, you can explore a total of three educational trails, which can be combined for a roughly 1.5-hour hike. Around the lake and in the nearby Cinkota small forest, resting and campfire spots, bike paths, and a uniquely shaped observation tower have been set up. The Digital Wanderer app will guide you through this exciting route.

Hermina Bike Park

The Hermina Bike Park isn’t just for cycling; it also features a fantastic playground and an adult fitness area. It promises great entertainment for both children and adults. And if you want to test your biking skills, you can do so on the pump track and jumps.

Felsőrákos educational path

The path offers an incredible taste of wilderness just a few steps away from the geometric centre of the capital, a mere 2 km in a straight line from Örs Vezér Square. Budapest’s second-largest protected area welcomes you with marshy meadows, bushy willow swamps, reedbeds, and alder groves, providing a home to a rich variety of plants and birds.
