Tour information

If you’re looking for a long, nature-inspired walk and a peaceful forest bathing experience, this 15.7-kilometre round trip will be the perfect choice for you, with only 300 metres of elevation gain. You can start your journey from the Országos Korányi Intézet bus stop, located near Széll Kálmán Square, by taking bus number 22 and following the yellow cross trail markers. After a few hundred meters, you will reach the outer parking lot of Budakeszi Wildlife Park, and soon you will arrive at Szilfa Clearing, from where a long, winding forest walk begins on a path lined with ancient milestones. After reaching the 493-metre-high Vörös-pocsolyás-hát, you can continue to enjoy the tranquillity of the forest, just follow the blue cross hiking trail marker! After a slight incline, you need to turn right onto the yellow round trip trail marker, which runs alongside the wildlife fence. Along the fence, you can take an unmarked path to a beautiful panoramic unnamed viewpoint where you can observe the nearby Csíki Hills and the contours of the Eastern Gerecse Hills. From there, you will return to the starting point following the well-known route back to Szilfa Clearing.

Attractions

Szilfa Clearing

A big favourite among families with young children is the one-hectare Szilfa Clearing, located near the Budakeszi Wildlife Park. Here, a modern playground blending harmoniously with nature, along with resting benches and tables, fire pits, a shelter from rain, and bicycle racks, await the visitors. This beautiful forest clearing is a perfect spot for picnics, outdoor sports, and several hiking trails also pass through here.

+ Programme tip

Budakeszi Wildlife Park

The Budakeszi Wildlife Park is located on the outskirts of Budapest, in the Budakeszi Valley. It can be reached by taking the 22 bus family from Szépjuhászné railway station. Covering over three hundred hectares within enclosed grounds, the park showcases the flora and fauna of the forests surrounding Buda, as well as species native to other parts of Hungary and Europe. The Budakeszi Wildlife Park was opened in 1979 on the occasion of the International Year of Children.

Budakeszi Adventure Park

Situated within the premises of the Budakeszi Wildlife Park, the adventure park offers six different levels of difficulty across its courses, inviting thrill-seekers who enjoy heights and excitement into its beautiful forest setting.

Budakeszi Arboretum

From Friday to Sunday, the Budakeszi Arboretum welcomes nature enthusiasts. It’s worth visiting not only for leisurely forest walks but also for its diverse range of organized programmes. Observe the park’s rich biodiversity while enjoying a peaceful, green environment not far from the city. At the forest pond, you can encounter pond turtles, and in the birdhouse, you’ll have the chance to see doves and quail.

Erzsébet Lookout Tower

Budapest’s most famous lookout tower is on János Hill, reaching 528 metres above the city, making it the highest point of the capital for over 110 years. It was named after Queen Elizabeth, better known as Sissy, who loved to admire the detailed landscape below from here. It’s worth visiting this attraction with a combined trip that includes a ride on the chairlift from the direction of Normafa.

Children’s Railway

The Budapest Children’s Railway is unique not only because it has been connecting the most beautiful forest hiking spots of Budapest for 75 years, but also because it is operated by children aged 10-14 who manage the railway traffic and handle ticket sales and inspections. The railway that operates between Hűvösvölgy and Széchenyi Hill is surrounded by numerous attractions that invite nature enthusiasts, such as the Elizabeth Lookout Tower on János Hill.
